Salvation Army

Mission Statement: The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the universal Christian church. Its message is based on the Bible. Its ministry is motivated by the love of God. Its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human need in His name without discrimination.

Our Purpose: "The purpose of The Salvation Army's Service Extensions is to raise funds and provide emergency assistance for people in a crisis situation in their local community."

The main areas of need that they assist with are rent or lodging, food, gas, bus tickets, utilites and medical...when funds are available.

These services vary according to the needs at any given time and the available resources. Volunteers coordinate with local ministerial alliances and various agencies to avoid duplication of efforts Services may be provided to residents and to transients.

The fiscal year ended on Sept. 30, 2010. At that time 371 people were assisted for the year. (This number is up from last years total of 231.) Of that number only 66 were considered transient, so most of our help went to the local citizens of Moore County. When someone is listed as "transient", that doesn't necessarily mean the person is homeless and going from city to city. Usually it is someone who is relocating to be closer to family or to start a job and needs gas, food, repairs or lodging on the way. It is also someone who has had a car accident in our town and needs a bus ticket to get home, or a soldier who is trying to get to his place of deployment.

Last year was their first effort for an Angel Tree which was co-sponsored with Wal Mart. Salvation Army was able to provide Christmas gifts to 125 children and food baskets to 13 families. Plans to extend this ministry to Moore County residents again this year with a few changes in the application system.

Since there is no longer the "Empty Stocking Fund" in the Dumas community the Salvation Army Board feels that requests may increase and would be ever so excited to accept donations which can be mailed to Salvation Army, P O Box 2222, Dumas, TX 79029. If anyone needs to contact Vickie Ellis, Director, her cell number is 683-3720.
