On Tuesday, October 19, 2010 the YMCA of Moore County provided a Breast Cancer Awareness Luncheon for it's participants to learn more about breast cancer and to learn ways of prevention. Jill Best the new Program Director for the YMCA of Moore County started the presentation with an overview of cancer in general and how exercise is a good prevention for this disease.
Moore County Hospital Director of Radiology, Julie Evenson spoke to the group about mammograms and the need to get them and especially once you become forty years old. The need for yearly mammograms once you are fifty years old was highly recommend. Julie Evenson also described different signs of possible breast cancer to look for in the monthly exam that each woman should perform on themselves. In fact because of a grant provided by Komen Grant Fund the hospital is able to provide breast cancer screenings to those who qualify at no or little cost. To find out if you qualify just call the hospital and ask for the radiology department at 806-935-7171.
Sue Owens of the Texas AgriLife Extension Service in the Family and Consumer Services spoke on nutrition being a good way to prevent cancer. Sue used the American Cancer Society guidelines for eating because it is so important to improve your health to reduce your cancer risk and to take a good hard look at what you typically eat each day. Mrs. Owens encouraged everyone to eat at least 5 servings of vegetables (including legumes, or peas and beans) and fruits each day. Try to eat those with the most color (a sign of high nutrient content). These foods are packed with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and many other substances that work together to lower risk of many cancers. Sue talked about other foods that were important to have as well as portion size. Divide your plate in such a way that your vegetables and fruit are taking up half of the plate. The other half is then divided in half again with half for your protein and half for carbs whether that is dessert or bread.
The staff of the Y ended the presentation asking if the participants would be interested in more lunch and learns in the future which might be done on a quarterly basis.
