Members of the community along with students of MC Amarillo College had a special guest speaker on October 26, 2010.  For more than 60 minutes, Harter related his early military career with his eleven crew member that all manned the B-24 Bomber called the Jeeter Bug.  The pilot of this B-24 Bomber was Frank Jeeter and Herb Harter was his co-pilot.  A documentary was shown to those attending that explained how it was a consequence that both the pilot and the plane both were named Jeeter.  The documentary film was about how the crew that Herb Harter served with  bonded.  The B-24 lost an engine when they were on a mission near Iwo Jima.  The crew was trying to contact Iwo Jima to let them know they were going down. They landed in the mist of the fighting where our Marines were fighting.  There was an air strip but no runway lights.  Harter explained how the land soldiers used their guns by firing them in the air to help light up the area were the runway was located. Herb said how they all felt out of their element on the ground, "We were just a bunch of Flyboys".
An engine was sent to them on an aircraft that was going to pick up wounded soldier in Iwo Jima.  They were able to replace the engine by taking great care with each and every part especially with the spark plugs off the old engine.  To the crew's amazement the engine started and they flew out of Iwo Jima with the sound of Japanese bullets pinging on the outside of the boxcar like plane.
Amarillo College invited Herb Harter to come speak to their students and the community as part of a program they have called the Common Reader. This semester they were reading the book Flag of our Fathers by James Bradley.   James Bradley is scheduled to be in Amarillo on October 29, 2010 at 7 p.m. at the Globe News Center for the Performing Arts. This is at no cost to the public.  The Common Reader program is designed to help incoming freshmen interact with the larger AC community through the shared experience of reading a book.  Books may be used in academic classes as well as in student group activities.
"Learning" is about ideas and how ideas are discussed.

Halloween will be celebrated on Halloween Day, October 31, 2010

It is quite simple really, it's kinda like tying your shoe or riding a bike. Once you learn how to do it....it's always the same such as the skill of remembering when exactly we celebrate Halloween here in Dumas, Texas.
The city has no plans to change the day that YOU celebrate Trick or Treat.  Halloween falls on a Sunday but it is still the 31st of October no matter what day that maybe.  So if in the future you are wondering if the the date will ever be changed....never fear it will always be the last day of October. See really simple!

Lunch and Learn @ The YMCA

On Tuesday, October 19, 2010 the YMCA of Moore County provided a Breast Cancer Awareness Luncheon for it's participants to learn more about breast cancer and to learn ways of prevention.  Jill Best the new Program Director for the YMCA of Moore County started the presentation with an overview of cancer in general and how exercise is a good prevention for this disease.
Moore County Hospital Director of Radiology, Julie Evenson spoke to the group about mammograms and the need to get them and especially once you become forty years old. The need for yearly mammograms once you are fifty years old was highly recommend.  Julie Evenson also described different signs of possible breast cancer to look for in the monthly exam that each woman should perform on themselves.  In fact because of a grant provided by Komen Grant Fund the hospital is able to provide breast cancer screenings to those who qualify at no or little cost.  To find out if you qualify just call the hospital and ask for the radiology department at 806-935-7171.
Sue Owens of the Texas AgriLife Extension Service in the Family and Consumer Services spoke on nutrition being a good way to prevent cancer.  Sue used the American Cancer Society guidelines for eating because it is so important to improve your health to reduce your cancer risk and to take a good hard look at what you typically eat each day.  Mrs. Owens encouraged everyone to eat at least 5 servings of vegetables (including legumes, or peas and beans) and fruits each day. Try to eat those with the most color (a sign of high nutrient content). These foods are packed with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and many other substances that work together to lower risk of many cancers. Sue talked about other foods that were important to have as well as portion size.  Divide your plate in such a way that your vegetables and fruit are taking up half of the plate. The other half is then divided in half again with half for your protein and half for carbs whether that is dessert or bread.
The staff of the Y ended the presentation asking if the participants would be interested in more lunch and learns in the future which might be done on a quarterly basis.
Here are some websites to help you learn more about these topics.

Do You Have Football Artifacts You Would Like To Share With The Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum

The High Plains Observer received a note from a viewer that wanted Dumas to be aware of an opportunity to share football artifacts with The Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum.  This is what Lisa Barr wrote us:
I'm Lisa Barr and I live in Spicewood, TX, but originally I'm from Monahans.
I was contacted by the guest curator of an upcoming exhibit at The Story of Texas Museum in Austin (The Bob Bullock Museum) about an upcoming exhibit he's planning.  The reason I was contacted is because a mutual friend knew about a 45rpm record I saved by Fred Crawford about the 1968? game between Monahans and Dumas where we beat you by 1st downs or penetrations (one or the other).
Anyway, the museum is looking for football artifacts.
Here's the link
http://www.thestoryoftexas.com/the_museum/look_ahead.html
I thought you guys might be interested in putting something in your newspaper about this exhibit, as I know Dumas ate, drank and slept football back in the late 1960's and early 1970's.
Lisa Barr
Thanks Lisa for sharing with us.  I bet that there are folks out there that would love to share with this museum your memories of past football artifacts.  Follow the link above for more information or read below an excerpt from their website here on the High Plains Observer Dumas

Texas High School Football: More Than the Game
Texas high school football is more than a game. It is the bond that holds together communities, from small burgs barely able to field a six-man team to 5A suburban schools that faithfully fill 20,000 seat stadiums to cheer their hometown heroes. It is the soul of Texas towns. It is the caravans of cars that drive 200 miles on a Friday night to support the home team, the endless post-game analyses in coffee shops, the local pride in past victories and legendary players. It’s also marching bands, drill teams, pep rallies, mascots, cheerleaders, twirlers, booster clubs, fans and fanatics. For at least a few hours every week in the fall, Texas high school football is the glue that transcends cultural, ethnic, and spiritual differences to define us all as Texan.
The action on the field, the noise in the stands, the pageantry of halftime and homecoming, the rousing pep talks in the locker room, the pronouncements echoing from the press box, the grueling hours of practice, are all part of a larger story about ourselves as Texans – a story that will be told at The Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum as it has never been told before by guest curator Joe Nick Patoski.
Do you have artifacts, film footage, or photographs related to Texas High School Football as it is described above? If so, and you would like them to be considered for the exhibit, please email footballexhibit@TheStoryofTexas.com.

Mayor Pat Sims is probably still wondering where the Ding Dong Daddy Statue is and when will the city be getting this Ding Dong Daddy Statue.

The plans for the Ding Dong Daddy Statue base never came and now the 16th of October has come and gone without a sign of the statue.  Will this be as close as Mayor Pat Sims actually gets to seeing the Ding Dong Daddy Statue?  Mayor Sims saw these pieces of the statue when he and Commissioner Mike Funk had visited the plant at the very end of August/ beginning of September.

This could possibly be an item of discussion at the city commissioner's meeting Monday, October 18, 2010 at 6:30 pm, Dumas Police Department at the Municipal Court room on 124 E. 7th St.

Early Childhood Intervention Services for Children with Disabilities

Tamara Steph is seen working with a down syndrome child, Melissa from Stratford.  Water is a fun and engaging environment in which Melissa with special needs can move more freely. The physical properties of water allow for decreased apparent weight, increased support, increased time for movements, and resistance for strengthening.  Tamara also uses water therapy as a social tool to help encourage Melissa who is one and a half years old to promote speech as seen here using a straw to use the muscles in and around her mouth. Tamara Steph is part of Region 16 Early Childhood Intervention Services.  Tamara and Melissa are utilizing the pool at the YMCA of Moore County which they do once a week for one hour.  Tamara Steph is a physical therapist for Region 16 and works with special needs children ages birth to three years of age.
Here are some reasons that water therapy is good not only for children such as Melissa but for everyone regardless of age that land based therapy may not provide:
Buoyancy- Provides assistance and support. It is used to decrease gravitational forces placed on weak limbs that are unable to bear much weight. Buoyancy allows a person to move more easily with decreased stress on muscles, joints, and bones.
Heat- Aquatic therapy is provided in a heated pool. The warm water relaxes muscles and allows for improved joint range of motion.
Hydrostatic pressure- The water surrounding the body helps circulate blood from the legs to the heart, often reducing any swelling in the ankles and feet. Once swelling is reduced, joint tenderness can decreases and range of motion can increase.
Resistance - Allows for improvement in balance and strengthening in all muscle directions. On land, resistance is felt in only one direction (that of gravity), which leads to an over development of some muscles and under utilization of others. Resistance also increases sensory awareness.

The YMCA of Moore County is so much more than a workout place.  It has been meeting the needs of our community since 1959 and it is still re-inventing itself to meet the needs in 2010.  All of this would not be possible without United Way funding for general expenses such as chemicals for the pool, utilities to provide the heat and so much more.

Thank You From Coffee Memorial Blood Center

I would like to take this opportunity to express my thanks for the blood drive held at the Y.M.C.A. on October 13, 2010. During the time we were there we had a total of 71 life saving donations.  This was an amazing turn out and we appreciate what we received.
If you were unable to give and missed the blood drive we will be back October 20, 2010 at the Dumas Amarillo College in the bloodmobile. Please spread the word.

We appreciate the community of Dumas taking time from there schedule to help save lives. Whether you are a donor, a blood drive coordinator, a business who hosts regular blood drives, a company that provides incentives for blood donations.
It’s “Because of You” that patients every day get another chance at life!

I appreciate your dedication in getting the word out to your employees, co-workers, friends, churches, and businesses.  I hope you know that the work you do is greatly appreciated by me, Coffee Memorial Blood Center and especially by the hospital patients in need of blood and blood products.

Dumas Police Department

In an effort to improve services to citizens, the Dumas Police Department has
implemented an on-line service for obtaining copies of traffic accident reports. This
service will allow the public, and their insurance companies, the flexibility of receiving
reports on-line and will eliminate the need to travel to the Police Department to obtain
an accident report.
To search for an accident report, you must have the report number OR date of accident AND last name of the driver.
The report is then immediately displayed and available for printing. The cost of the on-line service is $9.00 per report.
Citizens will still have the option of coming to the Police Department to obtain a report for $5.00. Payments online can be made by major credit or debit card. Only reports for accidents that have occurred after October 1, 2010 are available on-line. Should a person require a report dated prior to October 1, 2010, they can still retrieve it electronically by calling our office and we will web enable the report for you.
The Dumas Police Department recommends that you allow a minimum of five working days after the accident has occurred before attempting to access the report. Some accidents may require additional time to process.
Please visit www.dumaspd.org and on the left hand navigation click on Records or you can go directly to http://dumastx.policereports.us/.
