On Tuesday, April 14th, eight Moore County youth competed in the 1st Annual District Duds to Dazzle Competition in Amarillo, Texas. This is the first year for the competition state wide. Moore County 4-H took two teams to the competition. The junior/ intermediate team consisted of (from left to right) Katie Simnacher, Chasidy Easterling, and Sarah Stovall. These young ladies were given a shower curtain and told to make a wearable product out of it. The rules state that you must complete your project from start to finish in one hour. These young ladies made a doll dress despite sewing machine problems. You have to be 14 years old to advance to the state level, but these girls have the skill and I think you will see them there in the future! The Moore County Senior Team consisted of (from left to right) Junior Deleon, Alondra Torres, Marley Ortiz, Mariah Stone and (in front) Aalliah Acosta. This team was also given a shower curtain and asked to make something wearable out of it. They made a long, maxi type skirt with an underskirt. This team placed 1st in District competition and will represent Moore County and the State 4-H Round-Up in June!!! Youth in the 4-H Clothing & Textile Project learn about fibers and fabrics, wardrobe selection, clothing construction, comparison shopping, fashion interpretation, understanding of style and design, proper grooming, poise in front of others, and personal presentation skills. The Texas 4-H Duds to Dazzle Clothing & Textiles Competition goes one step beyond, utilizing the knowledge and skills learned in the project, while increasing awareness of the impact of the clothing & textile industry on the environment, specifically the waste stream. In the competition, teams of 4-H members will re-design and re-purpose discarded garments.
