City Of Dumas Garbage Truck Had Fire Inside

Thursday, June 2nd was not work as usual for Victor Trejo, driver for Solid Waste Department.  Somehow when making his daily residential rounds Victor pick up more than just trash.  Just before 11 a.m. Victor called his Supervisor, Judy Pendley to let her know there was a fire in his garbage truck.  Judy told him to try to make it back to the landfill so he could dump it.  Supervisor Judy Pendley then called the Fire Department and told them Trejo was on his way back.  The garbage truck turned the corner of Dumas Ave. and 19th Street just making it past the Dumas Nursing home when the fire caused him to have to pull over.

Dumas City Police were right behind the City truck blocking off traffic when the Dumas Fire Department arrived.  The Fire Department had Victor Trejo open the back of the truck so they could put out the fire.
The fire was put out but trash was on the ground and it took the city until 1 p.m. to clean up the debris and open 19th Street to traffic again.

Judy Pendley, Supervisor for the Solid Waste and Recycling Department said that this isn't the first time something like this has happen.  "The cause of the fire could be any number of things", says Judy, "from chemicals to even charcoals being put into the dumpsters".
