Dogie Days Supports Children Going To Texas Lions Camp

Our local Lions Club and the District Lions provide transportation to Texas Lions Camp each year so that area children may benefit from the the Camp. Texas Lions Camp is located in Kerrville, Texas and District 2T-1 finds and sends children that would benefit from these services. Deana Houlette has been serving as Dumas Noon Lions Club's coordinator for the past two years and is seen here helping to get kids off to Kerrville. This bus left on Fathers'day, June 19th. If you know someone who could benefit from this camp for next year contact Deana Houlette at Work - 935-2863 or Home - 935-3985.

The primary purpose of the Camp is to provide, without charge, a camp for physically disabled,
hearing/vision impaired, and diabetic children from the State of Texas, regardless of race, religion, or national origin.

The goal is to provide an atmosphere wherein campers will learn the "Can Do" philosophy and
be allowed to achieve maximum personal growth and self-esteem.
The Texas Lions Camp is recognized as a non-profit corporation, under section 501 (c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Service Code. The Camp is accredited by the American Camping Association, and is licensed by the Texas Department of Health.

History The Texas Lions Camp was chartered in 1949 in response to the terrible polio
epidemic that forever changed the lives of so many Texas children. Since that time, the
Texas Lions Camp has dynamically changed to include children who have all manner and
types of physical disabilities, diabetes and cancer. Today, we are serving more children
than at anyother time in our history. Over 1,500 children per summer attend Texas Lions Camp.

For more information about Texas Lions Camp you can go to the Dumas Noon Lions Club

City Of Dumas Garbage Truck Had Fire Inside

Thursday, June 2nd was not work as usual for Victor Trejo, driver for Solid Waste Department.  Somehow when making his daily residential rounds Victor pick up more than just trash.  Just before 11 a.m. Victor called his Supervisor, Judy Pendley to let her know there was a fire in his garbage truck.  Judy told him to try to make it back to the landfill so he could dump it.  Supervisor Judy Pendley then called the Fire Department and told them Trejo was on his way back.  The garbage truck turned the corner of Dumas Ave. and 19th Street just making it past the Dumas Nursing home when the fire caused him to have to pull over.

Dumas City Police were right behind the City truck blocking off traffic when the Dumas Fire Department arrived.  The Fire Department had Victor Trejo open the back of the truck so they could put out the fire.
The fire was put out but trash was on the ground and it took the city until 1 p.m. to clean up the debris and open 19th Street to traffic again.

Judy Pendley, Supervisor for the Solid Waste and Recycling Department said that this isn't the first time something like this has happen.  "The cause of the fire could be any number of things", says Judy, "from chemicals to even charcoals being put into the dumpsters".
