When Seconds Counts, A Local Business Owner Help Save Customer From Burning Car

James “Sweetie Green was going about his normal Monday afternoon on February 27th, at his A-1 Auto Care shop, when he heard a honking in front.  Honking is normal sound when you work at an auto shop but not constant honking.  When “Sweetie” Green looked up to see what was going on he saw a billow of smoke coming from the car that just drove up.  Sweetie recognized the car belonging to a long-time handicap elderly customer, Emil Coeny.  Mr. Green jumped into action dialing 911 then trying to remove Mr. Coeny from the now burning car.  Mr. Green was not able to help the customer without the help of Joe Hernandez a long time employee of A-1 Auto Care.  Sweetie and Joe got Mr. Coeny out of the burning car and into a chair that another customer, Bob Campbell bought from the office.

Shawn Shafer, an employee of Moore County Hospital, heard the 911 call and drove across the street with a fire extinguisher and put out the fire in the car.  The Dumas Fire Department and ambulance arrived checked Mr. Coeny was okay. 

An electrical fire above the glove box was the culprit of this very eventful Monday afternoon according to Mr. Sweetie Green.  When Mr. Green was asked if Mr. Coeny had come to A-1 Auto Shop because Coeny was having a problem with his car.  Sweetie said, “No Mr. Coeny looked to have been out for an ice cream cone when his car started having problems and he knew we could help get him out of his car.”


According to the Fire Department when seconds counted, the actions and quick thinking of Sweetie Green and Joe Hernandez heroic efforts saved Mr. Coeny’s life.  Shawn Shafer utilizing a fire extinguisher to bring the fire under control prior to the arrival of the fire department was also quick thinking.

Three New Board Members for CASA 69, Inc.

CASA 69, Inc. (Court Appointed Special Advocate) is a nonprofit organization who trains community volunteers who advocate for abused and neglected children in the court system. Currently we have 19 volunteers serving 48 children from Dallam, Hartley, Moore and Sherman Counties. We are governed by a Board of Directors with sixteen community volunteers that represent Dallam, Hartley, Moore and Sherman Counties. We began 2017 filling three openings with two new members for Moore County - Cindy Johnson and Bethany Scroggins and one new member from Dallam/Hartley Counties - Andy Hulett. All three have joined CASA 69 and will serve a three-year term. 


 Bethany and her family reside in Sunray and she works at MCHD as the External Marketing Representative and Care Coordinator. Bethany has been a CASA volunteer for a little over a year and has already worked three cases. She is anxious to put her marketing and fundraising experience to work to make a difference for our organization. Her community involvement includes membership in the Moore County Chamber of Commerce – Ladies Division, the Dumas Rotary Club and works on the Dumas ISD School Health Advisory Committee.


Cindy Johnson and her family live in Dumas and Cindy is the Office Manager for Moore County Road and Bridge Department. Cindy is very interested in being part of an organization that gives a voice for the children that is wanting to be heard but is afraid of speaking up. She brings ten years’ experience of being a pharmacy technician, ten years’ as the front desk manager for United Supermarket. Her community involvement has been serving on the Moore County United Way as Board President in conjunction with her spouse, working on committees for her children at their elementary school and her current involvement on the Demon Basketball and Baseball Booster Club to help CASA 69 make a difference in the lives of our future community leaders.


Andy Hulett and his family live in Dalhart and everyone knows Andy who is the Store Director for United Supermarkets. Andy has strong communication skills and uses them both in his career and home life. He is very dedicated and believes everyone should remain steadfast to their beliefs. He believes making a community strong is important and has served on the DISD Long Range Planning Committee, Rock Island Masonic Lodge, Dalhart Lions Club, Past President and Dalhart Chamber of Commerce, Past President to provide his leadership and ability to listen to improve the lives of those around him. CASA 69, Inc. hopes you will join us in welcoming Bethany, Cindy and Andy to our dedicated Board of Directors: Trent Cunningham, Kevin Douglas, Mike Ford, Stephanie Foust, Beth Moore, JoeAnn Moore and Terry Stegall from Dallam/Hartley Counties; Joli Hauser, Alicia Law, Wayne Smith and Steve Ulrey from Sherman County; Rowdy Rhoades, and Angela Warren from Moore County.

Museum Day at Window on the Plains Museum and The Art Center Announces Winners

Winners were Pam Keisling the single crust division with a pecan pie, Sherry Harper in the cream division with a coconut cream, and Thelma Smith in the cobbler division with a peach cream cobbler

Events kicked off at 8:30 with registration for the Best in the West Pie Contest. Winners were Pam Keisling the single crust division with a pecan pie, Sherry Harper in the cream division with a coconut cream, Chasidy Easterling in the double crust division with an apple pie and Thelma Smith in the cobbler division with a peach cream cobbler. Winners in each division were awarded an engraved pie server. Following the pie contest, pies were auctioned with proceeds to benefit the museum.






The antique tractor and classic car shows kicked off a 9 a.m. Car show winners were: Will Taylor of Canyon in the 1890 to 1931 division with a 1926 Model T Touring car; Zeke Neeley in the 1932 to 1953 division with a 1948 Jeep pickup, Van Trapp of Amarillo in the 1954 to 1976 division with a 1954 Chevrolet Belair; and Sonny Halpain of Perryton with a 1982 Manta Mirage. Best motorcycle was Jeff Wills of Dumas with a 1941 Harley Davidson Knucklehead. Best truck winner was Dennis Plunk of Dumas with a 1930 Chevrolet pickup. Winner of the history award with the best history on their vehicle was Terri Fry for a 1966 Chevrolet Impala.
Winner of the Viewers’ Choice in the Quilt Show was Sherry McCracken with a quilt made with her daughter Ashleigh’s Dumas Demon t-shirts. A quilt made by the Monday night quilting group “Stitchin” Sisters was won by Freda McMurry of Hereford.
Winner of the television give-away was Alexa Maples. The candy from the Candy Guess contest went to Lori Oliver of Fort Worth who guessed 423 pieces. There were 424 in the jar!
Winner of the People’s Choice in the tractor show was William and Donna Proctor of Amarillo with a 1941 B Farmall. The “Tractor Olympics” drew a lot of attention as drivers competed in contests to test their skills in driving a tractor. Winners were: Chain Drag - Ted Ray Coleman of Hereford, Barrel Roll - William Proctor, Candy Drop - Ted Ray Coleman, Egg Balance - Don Dowdy of Amarillo, Slow Tractor - Bill Watson of Dumas, Fast Tractor - William Proctor and Trailer Backing - Ted Ray Coleman.
Sidewalks in front of The Art Center were beautifully decorated during a Sidewalk Chalk Painting contest. First place award went to a team of Silvia Rodriquez and Ariel Gallardo. Second place was won by Kate Parsons and third place went to Jordan McAnarney.

Activities throughout the day kept visitors busy! A silent auction with 149 items kept visitors upping their bids during the day. Grab bags were available for those who like to be surprised with their purchases. Pulled pork sandwiches were served during lunch and cake and ice cream was available during the afternoon.
Jimmy Green demonstrated how arrowheads and tools were made by Indians with his flint knapping demonstration. An autograph party was held for Danielle Turner with her book “Chosen”. Artists Margaret Nelson and M. S. Franco did the illustrations and were signing books with Danielle.

Outside activities included rides on the barrel train and Lester’s Express.
