Moore County Commissioners and the Dumas City Commission recently entered into a partnership with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality and the High Plains Resource Conservation and Development office to sponsor a tire amnesty program this month.

Through the program, residents can dispose of used tires at a location at the landfill on South Maddox free of charge during regular operating hours. This will apply to anyone in Cactus, Dumas and Sunray and to those in the county outside the normal landfill mileage restrictions.

The program is available for communities to address stockpiles of unwanted tires and help prevent illegal dumping. Another benefit to our citizens are safety and health issues as these tire stockpiles often provide homes for unwanted rodents and snakes. The no-charge disposal service is available to all Moore County residents; however commercial tire retailers are not eligible. Any questions about this program should be addressed to Dumas City Hall at 935-4101.

All Dumas ISD Staff Meet Wednesday Afternoon To Learn What Mark Stroebel Expects

Dumas ISD School District Superintendent, Mark Stroebel held an all district staff meeting to let the DISD staff know what he expects of them and what they can expect of him.  Mark started his meeting by recognizing the School Board for the work they do for the School District.  January is School Board Appreciation Month so the attending board members were asked to come to the stage to be recognized.

Jordan Mills, Kirk Pope, Kevin Weatherford and Patti Willis
Board members that were not in attendance were Joe Ballard, Johnny Schmucker and Brett Clark.

"Why are we here"? Mark Stroebel said Wednesday afternoon when he address the Dumas ISD Staff.  A voice rang out from the audience "To Learn"!  'That's right", said School Superintendent Mark Stroebel, that had to be a Jr. High teacher to say that because it was the motto when I was at the Jr. High.  "Yes you are right were here to learn and you are going to learn who I am and what I stand for.  Just because my title has changed...the person hasn't."  Mark commented that isn't about him it is about what he wants for the staff, to have as a vision so he asked some very special people to join him on stage.  The students represented every DISD campus, all grades, all colors, mostly in the district and the handicap because this is what we are about.  Each student was asked to tell the audience what they expected of the Dumas ISD.
Mark Stroebel, Superintendent, Alayna Davis and her father, Shane Davis, Abril Erives and her mother, Leticia Erives, Collin Ford, Makalie Garcia, Macie Medrano, Kami Woodman, Zach Stovall, Brianna Mendoza, Joseph Estrada, Christian Rhoades, Kevin Heaton, Jordan Hutcherson, Cecy Borunda, Hollie Burrus and Jessica Hise, Cactus Teacher
The answers from the youngest to the oldest was awe inspiring but what a common theme, "To Learn".  Every student had great comments and expectations but one young student expressed it very well.  Macie Medrano a third grader at Morningside Elementary School said this, "I expect my school and my teacher to teach me the importance of being responsible and to help me get ready for college by giving me the best education for a bright future.

Foundation has been set a long time ago so all that is necessary is to stay the course and support each other with an open mind.  Dumas ISD has always risen to the occasion.  "We Are A Team".

Jeff Turner Says Chamber Seeks To Expand On The Successes Of 2010

Jeff Turner, Chairman of the Board for the Dumas/Moore County Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Center was asked to comment on what the Chamber well be doing this year and here is his reply.  Sounds like Jeff and his fellow board members will be staying very busy in 2011.

This year, the Chamber will seek to expand on the successes of 2010. Our Program of Work includes a number of business networking opportunities such as the Quarterly Networking Breakfasts, Business Roundtable, the annual Chamber Banquet and Ag and Industry Banquet, and Operation Thank You, the Chamber's annual member appreciation visitation event. The Chamber will continue its role to develop community leaders through the Leadership Dumas Class and will continue to make Dumas a prettier place to live through the Beautification Committee. In addition, business leaders from Moore County are encouraged to participate in the upcoming Panhandle Days, an event being held on February 21-22 to advocate Panhandle issues to elected officials in Austin. The Chamber will continue to play an important role in local events like Dogie Days, the 4th of July Celebration, staffing the Visitor's Information Center, and Candy Cane Lane.

The Board, staff, and volunteers of the Dumas/Moore County Chamber of Commerce are excited about serving and growing this community in 2011. We look forward to adding new members to the Chamber and seeing each of you at an upcoming event.
